Today I received the November 2020 Sew Sampler Quilting Box from the Fat Quarter Shop and wanted to share it with you. Here is the unboxing.
My box for November arrived quite a bit late.
Apparently there was a glitch with one of the suppliers so the Fat Quarter Shop had to wait to send out some of the boxes.
In reality that worked out great for me. This time of year is so busy anyway.
I plan to start this project in January after the holiday hubbub has wound down.
What Is In The Box?
Despite the delay – everything inside was certainly pleasing.
Fabric
The highlight of the box is always the fabric.
This month featured the Folktale Fabric line by Lella Boutique from Moda Fabrics.
The fabric features modern country patterns that remind me of the West.
There are pretty florals, stripes, polka dots, and even a Southwestern style print.
In the Sew Sampler Box we received a junior jelly roll of this line of fabric.
Quilt Pattern
To go along with the fabric, this box included an exclusive quilt pattern called Feelin’ Pine.
It features the fabrics in the junior jelly roll cut to resemble several pinecones scattered on a blue background.
The background fabric, binding, and backing fabric is NOT included in the box – which is how it typically works.
However, the Fat Quarter Shop does sell a finishing kit separately. This finishing kit includes ONLY the background fabric and binding.
You will need to buy the backing fabric separately.
I went ahead and purchased the finishing kit and this fabric for the backing.
I think it will come out really cute!
The pattern is for a lap quilt (which uses 1 junior jelly roll) or a twin size quilt – in which case you will need 2 jelly rolls and 2 finishing kits.
Duck Billed Scissors
The November 2020 Sew Sampler Box also included a pair of adorable and useful purple mini duck billed scissors from the Gypsy.
These scissors should be great for cutting threads and doing any close cutting work.
Bobbin Boat
Also included was this aqua colored Bobbin Boat.
It is a silicone tray for holding your bobbins.
I like that you can see what you have and keep it right by your sewing machine.
However, it is designed for Class 66 or Class 15 bobbins – which seem to be standard sized.
Since my Bernina 475 QE sewing machine uses jumbo bobbins, this won’t work for me.
But I could put it to use with my old Singer every now and then.
Mini Cut N Press Mat
This little quilting tool is great for on the go.
One side of the Mini Cut N Press is a cutting mat. The other side is a cushioned side for pressing or ironing your seams..
I was impressed with its sturdiness. It has a good heft and does not bend, so it is pretty solid.
The Fat Quarter Shop carries a bigger 12×18 size as well.
Track 8 for the Greatest Hits Album Quilt
Finally, this month’s Sew Sampler Box included Track 8 for the Greatest Hits Album Quilt.
Every month the box includes a “track” or card with instructions to create one block for this quilt.
By March or April, you should have instructions for all 12 blocks and then you can assemble and finish it.
If you jumped in half way through – no worries – each track is also sold separately on the website.
My Overall Impression
The November 2020 Sew Sampler Box was the second one that I have received.
I have to say that I really like all of the items in this month’s box – including the fabric.
The only thing that I probably won’t use is the Bobbin Boat because my sewing machine uses the wrong size bobbins for this.
Compared to the October 2020 Sew Sampler Box – I liked this one much better.
My plan is to continue the subscription through the end of this year and then reevaluate.
I love the box and think it is a good value. My concern is the time that I have available to make the projects.
My goal with this subscription box was to learn more quilting techniques and also to get more practice.
This will only happen if I actually do the work.
