Do you ever feel paralyzed by the amount of clutter in your life?

It can be physical stuff, digital clutter, paperwork, memorabilia, time commitments, people to manage – it all adds up.

I, too, have felt that way – and it’s not fun.

Allow me to re-introduce myself.

My name is Neena Nandagopal. I’m a wife, mom to four young adults and one elderly shih-tzu, professional organizer, former CPA, and founder of this blog AlmostPractical.com.

A Little About Me and Almost Practical

Ever since I was in grade school, I have been hyper aware of all the “things” in my life.

Clutter always made me feel overwhelmed to the point that I couldn’t get anything done until I managed to get all the stuff under control.

Well, you and I both know that that is an uphill battle.

Which is why I am compelled to share my experiences, my trials and errors, and also the things that work for me – all in the hopes of helping someone else.

My blog has also grown up along with me and my children.

Now that I am in my 50’s – my priorities and my organizational needs have matured and changed right along with me.

I enjoy sharing lifestyle content for women over 50 – home decor, travel, recipes, beauty, and fashion – along with my organization and productivity tips.

My Situation Now

With four grown children, you would think that we would officially be empty nesters, but we are not quite there yet.

We have two kids out of the house. Another one lives and works from our home, and our fourth is still in college.

And having spent almost 25 years in one house – we have accumulated a lot of stuff.

As an almost empty nester, I realized that I faced even more organizing challenges at this stage in my life than I did when I was younger.

In order to prepare for our own next chapter (whether downsizing or upsizing), I have been slowly making my way through all the things and making the hard decisions of what to do with each one.

Sorting Through Memories

It isn’t easy sorting through a lifetime of memories. And I am painfully aware that the time it takes me to deal with the past is stealing precious time from the present and the future.

This past year I lost my mom – and not only did that event make me realize that life is way too short, but it also drove home the fact that we should surround ourselves with only the things we love and the things that serve us well in the present moment.

Everything else is just stuff.

One of the books I am reading this year is The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning: How to Free Yourself and Your Family from a Lifetime of Clutter by Margaretta Magnussen.

It sounds kind of morbid, but it is about dealing with your possessions during your lifetime so as not to leave a mess behind for your loved ones.

Your Journey to a Decluttered Life

If your story is similar to mine – if disorganization has held you back from achieving your goals, then I feel your pain.

I created this site to offer up practical ideas for decluttering your space and making room in your mind to focus on the more important things in life – and that will always be the undercurrent theme on this blog.

We should not struggle under the weight of our possessions but rather be uplifted by the sense of order that we create around us.

Each of us has different organizational challenges and a different set of priorities. So there is no ONE single right way to go about decluttering.

My hope is that the information that I offer on this site will help you to craft strategies for dealing with your own organizational challenges.

Organization is not a destination – it is always a work in progress.

I hope you will join me on this journey.
