We went back and forth about whether to cut it down to counter height with the remodel. We decided to keep the bar height because it does have the sink on it and it offers a buffer and a place to hide things as it does open up to the family room. We also like that bit of separation that the bar height allows. If the sink wasn’t there we would cut it down because having one continuous solid surface is definitely more appealing. Hi Gail,
I agree – even though counter height seating is more comfortable – I like bar height because it provides a shield for some of the counter clutter. And for sure, I always have activity around the sink – a drying rack, soap dispensers, etc.

If you are using the faucet, it is constantly splashing water on the counter and I am constantly having to wipe the counter. If a person is sitting at the counter, they are getting splashed too. If there was no sink in the counter, then I like the counter height. But as long as there is a sink or even if there was a range top, then I prefer bar height. I am actually going to convert my counter height to a bar height since I hate it so much. A range top in the island is even worse than the sink. That is an awful idea having people sit that close to a hot cooktop. Very stupid.

And to be able to interact with people in living room. Counter height is for me. I’m 5 3 and despise sitting at a bar. Bar height is only used to eat at. Countertop can be both.
